Applying for a Grant

InterAct for Change recommends the use of the Common Grant Application to foundations (grantmakers) and organizations applying for a grant (grantseekers).  The application was developed initially by a large collaborative of grantmakers in Greater Cincinnati.  The purpose of the application is to help grantmakers and grantseekers understand the grantmaking process, and to provide organizations and foundations with a common language and framework when applying for and reviewing applications for funding.

Many foundation clients and philanthropic partners of InterAct have embraced the Common Grant Application because it:

  • Provide consistent and more complete information from grantseekers, reducing the time involved in seeking additional information from incomplete proposals;
  • Allows an “apples to apples” comparison of grant requests;
  • Results in better, more complete—but usually not a greater number of—proposals that are easier to read and evaluation; and
  • Eliminates duplicative effort in collaborative funding activities.

In 2006, as part of its work to advance organized philanthropy, and building on the successful experience of Greater Cincinnati grantmakers using the Common Grant Application, the Ohio Grantmakers Forum developed the Ohio Common Grant Forms (OCGF), a series of documents to streamline grantseeking, grantmaking, and reporting. All forms are provided as Microsoft documents that can be downloaded, so grantseekers can type responses directly into the form. The fill-in-the-blank forms are MAC and PC compatible.

For grantseekers:  Please check with the foundation to which you plan to apply to ascertain whether the common grant forms may be used for your proposal.
